Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference between alcoholic patients and normal controls on negative affect (anger, depression, anxiety) and effect of anger on alcoholism. We compared 40 alcoholic patients who were admitted to Seoul National Mental Hospital with 40 controls. All subjects are assessed by drinking pattern questionnaire, National Mental Hospital Alcoholism Screening Test, State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Results were as follows£º1) Alcoholics group had drunken more amount of alcohol and more frequently than controls. And scores of state anger, trait anger, anger-in and anger-out in alcoholics group were significantly higher than controls. And BDI score was also significantly higher in alcoholics group. 2) Amount of alcohol drinking was correlated with state anger, anger-in, anger-out and frequencies of drinking was correlated with trait anger. NAST score was correlated with trait anger, anger-in, anger-out. But depression and anxiety were not associated with drinking amount and frequencies. Conclusively, we suggest that anger has a significant effect on alcoholism, so appropriate assessment and anger management is needed for alcoholic patients.
